through our traditions,
There is nothing closer to Cretan culture and tradition than the Cretan Raki. This alcohol is given at the end of every Cretan meal as a way to bring people closer together. Inside every smooth sip there is a hidden drop of history and from this history grew a form of Cretan tradition.
Ancient philosophers, such as Aristotle, would suggest Cretan Raki to the community as a product of longevity. It was a known honor to be able to uphold the recipe of this alcohol in Crete.
In 1920, governor Venizelos made the production of Raki legal where some of the very first distilling licenses were given to vineyards. One of those families to receive a license to distill Raki was the Galanos “METZO” Family.
In 1940 Yiani’s grandfather, Metzo-Yianis, started his own distillery in the village of Faratzi in Mylopotamo, Crete. Today, that very same distillery is where the magic of the MetzoRaki continues!
